I got my Master’s degree in International Economics at the Faculty of Geographical Sciences of Utrecht University (1998). My thesis focused on the international expansion strategy of Silicon Graphics Inc., where I joined a working period (Dutch marketing office).
In 1998, I started as a doctoral candidate e-business at VU University Amsterdam. For two years, I was a member of the board of the Edispuut, the Dutch network for Ph.D students in electronic data interchange (EDI) and e-commerce. I followed the Ph.D. program at the graduate school of Economics of the Tinbergen Institute. In 2003, I finished my Ph.D. thesis titled “Towards Understanding Online Purchase Behavior” and became an assistant professor e-business at VU University.
Drawing upon my academic research I started two companies: Scanyours.com and SYNQ. Scanyours (2000) was specialized in measuring and benchmarking the conversion power of small business transaction websites. I was managing director of Scanyours up to the year 2007. SYNQ (2004), which was an official spin-off of the VU University, specialized in the strategic positioning of websites of large-scale industry players.
Since 2007, I am working as an associate professor e-business at VU University Amsterdam. My research has successfully been published in leading academic journals such as Information & Management, European the Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication and Computers in Human Behavior. I am teaching the courses e-business and interactive marketing. For business, I am involved in several e-business development initiatives and workshops.
